AUTOKINETIC EFFECT

During one of the weekends of April of 2009, there were many reported sightings of UFO especially from the southern states. One sighting was reported in Alamo, Tennessee. Witness reported that he saw a strange object in the sky flying over a forest. Also he claimed to have seen strange balls on the ground. Another account occurred in Lebanon, Tennessee. Two objects were observed. According to the witness, the two objects were changing directions and velocity. He also described that one of the objects had a single point of light that was brighter than the rest of the object. Sightings occurred in other states as well, but Tennessee had the most.

The autokinetic effect is a visual illusion of a stationary dot that seems to move about. This effect was suggested by Muzafter Sherif when he held an experiment concerning it. The purpose of his experiment was to see how people influenced one another. In a dark room, the participants had to stare at a small stationary dot. Later, they wrote how much the dot had moved, which is the autokinetic effect.

The autokinetic effect explains why some people report sightings of UFOs. Most witness accounts state that there were bright lights. According to autokinetic effect, the bright lights were stationary or unmoving dots, at which the witnesses stared so much that illusions of them moving were created. Without the explanation of the autokinetic effect, it would have been easy to label the witnesses as crazy loonies.
